Let’s celebrate our Independence Day.
Its a celebration of our freedom
As enshrined in the Constitution
Let’s Give Thanks to our founding fathers’ wisdom

But let’s also ponder. Is it
Truly an Independence Day for all Americans.
Seniors, children, workers, blacks, women, LGBTQ
Dare I ask
Are we celebrating a false sense of freedom across the nation?

The highly idealistic declaration of independence proclaims
“That all men are created equal”
Sadly, it was not true then and it’s not true now
Women and blacks were left out then
Today still not true, just a jingoistic ritual

As citizens of the richest nation
Those of us who are privileged, should ask
Are all Americans Free from:
– hunger
– homelessness
– poverty
– violence
– fear of mass shootings
– I’ll health
– bad education
– homophobia
– social media ‘s corrupting grip

The answers vary across the groups
Majority remains unwilling to give up privileges
Ones freedom should not come at the expense of others
As God’s children, anything but equality should be sacrilegious.

Let’s go! Enjoy the bounty of our fertile land.
